Bronze casting
I cast several portraits in bronze. The process of creating a bronze sculpture takes a number of steps and requires a lot of preparation and planning in addition to time and money. Casting bronze was good preparation for the product development work I do now.
This portrait is my first, and it was cast at almost twice life size. It is a testament to the amount of commitment I had as a 22 year old UC Berkley student in 1983.
Collaboration
Making a good sculpture is difficult, and it requires collaboration. I learned a lot about life doing portraits and listening to the life stories of people as I sculpted.
celebration
Making portraits also involves the whole family and community of the subject. Negotiating these complex webs is part of the process.
purpose
I was driven by forces that I cant really explain to make sculptures, and I still find myself making things for reasons beyond words. I find it easier to just make a protype and let that work communicate the notion.
